Correctly hitting a pressure point on the human body can instantly incapacitate an attacker. And you can accomplish this by just using your hands! Unfortunately, most women are unaware of these techniques, and either freeze up or flail wildly during an attack instead. If you want to survive and escape an assault, you need to learn not only where the most vulnerable pressure points are but also how to effectively hit them to crumple your assailant in his tracks.
What Is A Pressure Point?
By definition, a pressure point is a specific area on the body where a nerve lies close to the surface and is supported by a bone or muscle. I’m sure you have all heard of acupuncture and reflexology. These are examples of how pressure points can be used to heal people. But we are going to learn how to use them to hurt people.
When a pressure point is struck with force, many things can happen. The attacker may feel extreme pain, be stunned, or have balance and motor skill failures. Even if the results do not take him down, they should buy you enough time to get away. Bash and dash should be your preferred goal. I would always rather run away than have to pull a gun and shoot, but sometimes you may have no other option. At least by temporarily immobilizing him you have a better chance of getting a killing shot.
Keep in mind that an attacker may also use pressure points to his advantage. Choke holds actually compress, not strike, your carotid artery to the point that you may become disoriented or even pass out. You need to learn how to break free of these holds, as well as any other hold someone may have on you.
Where Are The Most Effective Pressure Points Located?
The human body is literally loaded with pressure points. And there are countless numbers of ways to take an attacker down by using them. But the head is where you can do the most damage. Any pressure point that directly affects the brain will do the most harm. Let’s take a look at some of them:
The skull is at its weakest point right between the eyes. The eyes and the space between them are a great choice to strike, because extreme pain is the least of the damage done. Direct eye strikes will cause brief (or permanent) blindness and also watery, blurry vision for a significant period of time. Any eye strike should give you the distraction you need to get away.
Your fingers can do this just fine, but knuckles, keys or a Bad Kitty will do considerably more significant damage. I never go anywhere without the Bad Kitty.
Hitting the sinus cavity just right will cause immediate unconsciousness. Use the heel of your palm to strike up and under the nose, and throw the entire weight of your body into that palm “heel punch” when you do it.
A side or throat knife hand strike done correctly is one of the best ways to drop an attacker. Keep your fingers straight and tight together with your thumb bent at the knuckle, and hit below and slightly in front of the ear or directly on the front of the throat.
Did you know if you cup your hands and slap them directly over the ears you can burst an eardrum? Don’t stick around to watch the blood flow out of them after you do this. Get away.
Pressure Point Hits on the Knees
The knee is very vulnerable from every angle. While you may be tempted to kick the knee cap, front kicks are less likely to result in enough of an imbalance to drop the attacker. Instead, use the flat part of your foot and kick the side of the knee. He should fall like a felled tree. Feel free to stomp on his other foot as he falls.
Groin Pressure Point
All of our lives we have been told to “kick him in the groin” if attacked. While painful, this is actually the least effective point to hit. This should not discourage you from kicking him there, just do it multiple times. Most men can take a single kick in the groin and keep on coming, and now you’ve made him even angrier.
Furthermore, if you are unlucky enough to be attacked by a guy strung out on drugs, he won’t feel it at all. That is why you need to go for blindness, unconsciousness, or physical take down by the knee if at all possible.
Which Pressure Point Technique Should I Use?
The answer to this question is completely dependent on the situation you are in. Never get closer to the attacker than you already are. Don’t charge him to gouge his eyes if you can take a good swipe at his knee. Work from as far away as you can.
You may find yourself grabbed from behind which is truly terrifying. But you can still break free! Watch this video for some great tips! The girls in this video are awesome and very passionate about teaching women how to defend themselves from any unwanted aggression. It is 10 minutes long, but well worth watching! The most important thing to take away from them is to understand that your size doesn’t matter. Even a very small woman can take down a large man.
We had a Well Armed Woman meeting recently where the ladies were shown all sorts of alternative tools and methods of self defense. While they enjoyed the presentation, several have made comments that they are now more scared than ever of being attacked. This is due to not even being aware of the techniques that will be used against them by the attacker. I am not trying to scare you. I just want you to be aware and prepared to defend yourself in any situation. You should be able to go on “auto pilot” when being attacked, and not even think about what you have to do. Every second counts.
Pressure Point Roundup
In a self defense situation, time is of the essence. You must execute pressure point techniques that produce immediate take downs. Do not randomly punch and flail. All that does is tire you out, and believe it or not, that is exactly what the attacker wants. Tiring out nearly always turns into giving up, which inevitably ends up in rape or worse.
Remember that your goal is to get away. The number one place women are attacked is while they are getting into their cars. Be especially aware of your surroundings in parking lots.
Tools such as keys, the Bad Kitty, pens, knives and kubota sticks can aid you in your defense. Always carry objects that give you an advantage over your attacker. And even though you may carry a concealed firearm every day, you still need to have the skills to break free from any kind of hold to use it or any other self defense product. I also strongly suggest you look into taking the NRA course Refuse To Be A Victim.
Be safe my friends.
